Designs by Marshall was founded by Heather Rose Marshall in 2009 as a side gig to learn more about residential design. Heather studied Architecture at Wentworth Institute of Technology and received her Bachelors of Architecture (BARC) in 2006. She worked on many building types like universities, high schools, municipality and military facilities while working for architectural firms in Boston. She was successfully climbing the ladder in her career, but as she started a family the struggle of work/life balance began. Being a first time mother, she found herself as a “weekend parent”, only seeing her son on weekends because he was in daycare 12 hours a day while she worked. Then, just a few years after her first son was born, the struggle got harder as her husband developed medical issues that took him away from work for almost a year. In 2015, when her husband was well and back, Heather finally had enough and decided to quit her corporate job and go into business for herself, designing mostly homes.

Leaving the corporate life, Heather wanted to build a business that supported the working families, or really anyone that just wanted more flexibility in their work. Instead of a traditional architecture practice, she works as a sole proprietor hiring Architects and Drafters as consultants, giving them ultimate flexibility. This keeps Designs by Marshall’s service costs lower with less overhead. We are able to scale our production to meet growing needs, but we are also helping others with an alternate stay at home work opportunity.

Today, Heather is recognized as a leading Architect in the South Shore in Massachusetts, design homes that are both beautiful and functional. She strives to deliver high quality design at a reasonable price, making architecture and design accessible to more homeowners.
