Designs by Marshall was founded in 2009 by Heather Rose Marshall as a way to explore her passion for residential design. Heather earned her Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) from Wentworth Institute of Technology in 2006 and began her career in Boston, working on large-scale projects including universities, high schools, municipal buildings, and military facilities. She quickly advanced in the corporate world, but as she started her family, the challenge of balancing career and motherhood became clear.
As a first-time mom, Heather found herself in the heartbreaking role of a “weekend parent,” with her son spending long days in daycare while she worked. A few years later, when her husband faced medical issues that kept him out of work for nearly a year, Heather reevaluated her path. In 2015, with her husband back on his feet, she made the decision to leave corporate architecture behind and build her own practice—one focused on designing homes and creating balance, both for her family and for others.
Rather than a traditional firm, Heather built a flexible practice model. She collaborates with architects and drafters as consultants, offering them the freedom to work on their own terms while keeping client costs manageable. This approach allows Designs by Marshall to scale efficiently while also supporting others with meaningful work-from-home opportunities.
Today, Heather is recognized as a trusted residential architect on Massachusetts’ South Shore. She designs homes that are both beautiful and functional, with a focus on high-quality, thoughtful design at a reasonable price—making architecture accessible to more homeowners.
